The No. 1 defensive back in the 2018 NFL Draft is Alabama Crimson Tide safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Some believe that Fitzpatrick will be better as a cornerback, but the truth here is that he can play multiple positions at a star-caliber level.

With Jabrill Peppers working as the complete package at strong safety and Fitzpatrick doing the same at free safety, the Cleveland Browns would have the foundation for an elite defense.

Fitzpatrick can line up in the slot and take a receiver out of a game. He can line up at free safety and close the windows that quarterbacks expect to open up over the top. He can even play as a box safety who brings support for the run and aids the pass rush.

With two positionally fluid players in Fitzpatrick and Peppers, the Browns would have the versatility to alternate their schemes and keep the opposition off-balance.

On the field, Fitzpatrick is the perfect combination of a stellar ball hawk and a fundamentally polished cover man. Beyond the field, he’s an absolute workhorse who lives and breathes football, and should be a film rat if surrounded with the right veterans—or even if he isn’t.

Fitzpatrick can come in, change the culture, play at an All-Pro level, and help Peppers realize his potential.
