2018 NFL Draft: Justin Lawler Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
SMU’s Justin Lawler is a strongly built 2018 NFL Draft defensive line prospect.
Just Lawler is an edge defender who makes an impact thanks to his raw strength and effort. However, he lacks the elite athleticism needed to match up with the other 2018 NFL Draft prospects. This is why he sits as a later round option.
Lawler features a strong frame with less than ideal length. His build and raw power give him the ability to set the edge against the run. He also does a good job fighting through blocks to attack the ball carrier.
This is a hard worker who doesn’t shy away from contact. He looks to take the fight to the offensive line while also pursuing the football. Lawler has a non-stop motor and can often be found making plays several yards down field.
SMU asks Lawler to work out of a two and three-point stance. His pass rush skills are limited, but he creates some pressure thanks to his effort. The biggest issue is that Lawler lacks fluid movement skills and is a stiff athlete.
He struggles bending around the corner and lacks a strong counter move. Overall, he doesn’t show much of a plan when rushing the passer. His production would likely improve if he was more committed to gaining inside hands.
Improving his hand usage would also help him become a more effective run defender. The best fit for Lawler at the next level would be as a 5-technique. In this role, he would be able to use his strength to support the run.
It would also allow him to develop as a pass rusher and potential contribute in that department down the road.
