2018 NFL Draft: Key strengths and weaknesses for Kurt Benkert
Strength: Throwing On The Run
One of the featured aspects of the Virginia Cavaliers’ offense is a set of rollouts to the quarterback’s right. Kurt Benkert executed those to perfection with perfect footwork, explosive arm talent, and an adequate level of speed and agility.
What was most impressive about Benkert’s ability to execute those plays is just how accurate his throws were on the run.
It would be ideal if a quarterback were always playing within the confines of a perfect pocket. That simply isn’t the case, however, which makes one’s ability to make throws on the run a borderline essential strength at the next level.
For a player like Benkert, if he isn’t going to embrace the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning mentality of either going down or throwing the ball away, this will be even more important.
The fact that Benkert can execute a rollout and fire an accurate throw to a receiver in coverage is nothing short of encouraging. That strength will sell in any era and offense, and Benkert’s game film proves that he has it in spades.
That should make him an appealing option to a number of coaches and coordinators, namely those who run a west coast offense.
