2018 NFL Draft: Marcell Ateman Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Oklahoma State’s Marcell Ateman is a long 2018 NFL Draft wide receiver prospect with some red zone potential.
Marcell Ateman had a very strong career at Oklahoma State and is hoping to turn that into hearing his name called early in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, he has more than a few shortcomings that will likely make him a later round selection.
Ateman brings a long frame and good arm length to the field. He is someone who looks to use that length to his advantage. This gives him the ability to win in contested situations and attack the ball at its highest point.
However, he needs to be a little more physical and hang onto the ball with more consistency. Ateman will lose control of the ball too often when faced with contact.
The key is that Ateman is willing to high-point the football which gives him room to grow. He also has the body control needed to adjust to the football. His long arms and catch radius helps him pluck the ball away from his frame.

Ateman is an underrated route runner as someone with good deception. He works to disguise his routes and does a great job changing speeds. Ateman is also willing to work back to the quarterback.
This ability to change speeds is key to Ateman’s success as he lacks the quickness most evaluators look for at the wide receiver position. He is a long strider who takes time to reach his top speed. His 4.62 40-time at the combine matches what we see on tape.
Overall, Ateman has potential as a possession receiver capable of winning in contested situations. His lack of speed is a concern that will push him down the draft. However, there’s enough upside here for Ateman to eventually develop into a contributor.
