Deon Cain is the epitome of untapped potential, but the Indianapolis Colts could be the franchise that helps him become a steal of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Indianapolis Colts aren’t receiving quite enough praise for how methodical they were at the 2018 NFL Draft. With Andrew Luck returning to a team that hasn’t exactly provided him with an ideal supporting cast, the Colts made it a point to help him return to form.

While all eyes are rightfully on offensive lineman Quenton Nelson, it’s a later selection that could prove to be one of the steals of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Indianapolis has equipped Luck with help on both sides of the ball. Nelson and Braden Smith should bolster the offensive line; Darius Leonard, Tyquan Lewis, and Kemoko Turay should help the pass rush; and Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins bring depth to the rushing attack.

It was in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, however, that the Colts selected a player who could diversify the offense: Deon Cain.

Indianapolis already has a star-caliber wide receiver in T.Y. Hilton, but Cain could fill a significant void in Luck’s receiving corps.

Cain is a 6’2″ and 202-pound wide receiver who boasts 4.43 speed and a wingspan that ranks in the 93rd percentile. His hands are small for the position, but he’s a player who’s all about creating separation and getting under passes.

One could argue that Hilton thrives in that same capacity, but having a bigger target for downfield throws should give Luck a riveting second option.

Cain is a big play waiting to happen, as well as an easily identifiable target who has a championship pedigree following his decorated career at Clemson.

Perhaps Cain won’t be a No. 1 wide receiver at the next level, but he could have three-down value. He’s big and long enough to be a solid blocker, is a fluid route runner, and has proven to be a gifted playmaker after the catch with a unique combination of size, speed, and strength.

If the Colts can help Cain polish his already intriguing skill set, he could justify the Roddy White comparisons he received leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft.

Even if he fails to become a Pro Bowl level contributor, Deon Cain represents the type of low-risk, high-reward selections that the Indianapolis Colts needed to make.
