Dallas Cowboys Offseason Review
By Jon Dove
The Dallas Cowboys offseason was more about their losses than additions thanks to the departure of Dez Bryant and retirement of Jason Witten.
It was pretty obvious that the Dallas Cowboys wanted to add more speed to the wide receiver unit. This came after a year where the offense struggled to produce big plays. In order to make this change, Dallas had to part ways with Dez Bryant.
This isn’t a major loss as Bryant has struggled to both stay healthy and produce. However, the Cowboys didn’t replace him with any top-end talent.
Their big moves at the wide receiver position include Allen Hurns, Tavon Austin, Michael Gallup and Deonte Thompson. Hurns has the best track record for production but has dealt with several injuries over the past few years.
Gallup has the biggest upside of the wide receiving corps and could quickly become a factor. The question marks at wide receiver are only compounded by the loss of Jason Witten. Despite his age, he remained one of Dak Prescott‘s favorite targets.

The Cowboys did some work along the offensive line this offseason. They drafted Connor Williams in the 2nd round and signed Cameron Fleming from the New England Patriots.
These additions provide the Cowboys with some options as Williams, Fleming and La’el Collins can all play either guard or right tackle. Dallas can mix and match in order to get the best group on the field.
Defensively, the Cowboys used their 1st round pick on linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. He’s an explosive athlete who makes plays all over the field. Look for him to start out at outside linebacker and serve as the long-term replacement for Sean Lee.
The defensive line add some depth with Kony Ealy and Jihad Ward. Both should figure into the rotation right away.
