The contract stalemate between Le’Veon Bell and the Pittsburgh Steelers appears likely to provide James Connor with a big opportunity.

Le’Veon Bell is arguably the best running back in the entire NFL. He is someone who produces on multiple levels. The fact he is as dangerous as a pass catcher out of the backfield as he is a runner shows his value.

However, the Steelers and Bell have had an extremely tough time coming together on a long-term contract extension. This has resulted in Bell being slapped with franchise tag two years in a row.

The situation has appeared to only deteriorate further as it looks like they are heading for a breakup. This means that the Steelers may start giving James Connor more touches to assess the backups future.

A report from the Athletic’s Mark Kaboly talks about how Connor looked good during offseason workouts.

If Connor has a strong showing this season it would make the decision to let Bell walk easier. It would also impact how the Steelers attack the 2019 NFL Draft. Either way, expect the Steelers to heavily scout the upcoming running back class.

One major thing to note is that Connor is a very different player than Bell. He lacks Bell’s quickness and pass catching skills. Connor is more of a downhill runner who utilizes his size and strength to move the pile.

Making a full time change from Bell to Connor would be force an adjustment in the offensive attack. It also likely means the Steelers will be on the lookout for a 3rd-down back with pass catching skills.
