AFC East: Team Needs for the 2019 NFL Draft
By Thomas Welte
New York Jets
Team Needs: Edge, OT/OG, CB
The writing appears to be on the wall for current Jets head coach Todd Bowles. The Jets will need to find a new head coach, and add some talent around Darnold if they hope to compete in the AFC East anytime soon.
The New York Jets have been desperate for a pass rusher to emerge, and no one on the current roster has stepped up. The Jets are looking at a top 5 pick in the draft, so they are in prime position to snag a pass rusher. Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell makes a lot of sense for New York.
The Jets may be able to secure a pass rusher in free agency and set their sights on protecting Darnold. New York will likely have a shot at Alabama left tackle Jonah Williams, and it’s a safe pick at an important position. If the Jets elect to wait until the second round to grab a left tackle, a name to watch is Yodny Cajuste from West Virgina.
New York has a talented young player in safety Jamal Adams, but Adams is the only standout in the secondary at this time. Trumaine Johnson is aging and Morris Claiborne has had a turbulent career. It may be early for a corner, but Greedy Williams and Byron Murphy are both elite prospects that may tempt the Jets into pulling the trigger in the top 5.
