NFC North: Team Needs for the 2019 NFL Draft
By Jakob Ashlin
Chicago Bears
Needs: RT, LOLB, G
The Chicago Bears have been a surprise contender this season. They currently own a record of 11-4 and behind their elite defense, sitting atop the NFC North and have a shot at the Super Bowl.
The Bears will not have a first round or second round pick due to trades for Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller.
It is hard to pinpoint needs on this roster, but there are a few positions that could be improved. Bobby Massie has been solid for the Bears this season, but he has been the weakest player on that line. He has also struggled with inconsistency throughout his career. Adding a player like Ohio State’s Isaiah Prince for competition would be a wise move for Chicago.
Leonard Floyd has disappointed since being drafted ninth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Floyd has only four sacks this season, which is less than the 4.5 sacks he posted in 10 games last season. He has still potential, but the Bears would be wise to start exploring other options. Chicago could look to add a developmental pass rusher with upside like Wyoming’s Carl Granderson.
Kyle Long’s level of play has decreased this season. Pro Football Focus ranks Long only as the 27th best guard in the league this season. He is a still a good starter for Chicago, but he is 30 years old and has battled injuries. It would be smart for the Bears to select a guard in the draft with potential to develop behind Long. Standford’s Brandon Fanaika could be a fit in Matt Nagy’s offense.
