2019 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Drew Lock
Floor: Jay Cutler
No quarterback wants to be compared to Jay Cutler. The former Broncos, Bears, and Dolphins quarterback had one of the most mediocre carers in recent history, however, some of his game is seen when watching Drew Lock.
Like Cuter, Lock is best in the pocket. When given time Cutler was generally solid and could deliver the ball where it needed to go, However Cutler did not do well when on the run or under pressure and would often force the ball downfield leading to interceptions. That is exactly what Lock has a tendency to do.
If Lock doesn’t improve his pocket presence and decision making he may compare to Cutler.
Celling: Pat Mahomes
As talked about there’s a lot of Pat Mahomes in Drew Lock’s game. NFL teams are going to be scouring the NFL Draft trying to find a player like Mahomes, and some team is sure to see that in Drew Lock.
Lock is a gun-slinger who can throw the ball further than nearly anyone. He also is extremely accurate when in the pocket similarly to Mahomes.
If Lock can become better on the run and under pressure he truly can be a clone of Mahomes who can make a throw in any pressure situation.
The arm strength is there for Lock now it’s time to add the pocket awareness.
Team Fits: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Giants & Washington Redskins
The best fit for Lock is a team with a solid offensive line. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have that. The poor quarterback play of Jamies Winston and playoff drought of over a decade likely means the Bucs will look to add a quarterback in the 2019 draft.
Drew Lock is an excellent fit. With the Bucs offensive line, he should have plenty of time. He’d also have one of the best wide receivers in the game to throw to in Mike Evans and one of the best young tight ends in OJ Howard.
Other fits for Lock are the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. The Giants offensive line is a work in progress but nearly any quarterback would thrive in New York with Odell Beckham Jr, Saquon Barkley, Sterling Sheppard and Evan Engram at their disposal.
The Redskins would also be a fit because if healthy they have a dynamic offense line that can give Lock time to spread the ball. There is also the potential for Lock to sit behind Alex Smith, who could mentor Lock like he did Mahomes if Smith recovers from his injury. The Redskins would have to add some offensive weapons for Lock to thrive.
