In what is a thin running back class David Montgomery may be the first selected but, does he have the making of an NFL running back?

Player Name: David Montgomery

Player School: Iowa State

Position: Running Back

Projected Draft Position: Second Round

Despite playing behind a lackluster offensive line at Iowa State David Montgomery proved to be one of the top running backs in the entire nation. The 5’11 running back is one of the shiftiest backs in the country who makes plays in the run game and pass catching game.

David Montgomery is not getting the same level of hype as other players with more impressive highlight films, but Montgomery offers steady and reliable production from the position. David Montgomery has had a career at Iowa State that should put his name in the discussion for the top running back in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The running back position is valued differently by every franchise, so where Montgomery is drafted will heavily depend on need and value for NFL teams. That said, David Montgomery has shown that he can play and should hear his name called by the end of the second round. Do not be shocked if Montgomery sneaks into the first round with a good showing at the combine.

Chris Trapasso of CBS sports compares Montgomery to both the Giants Saquon Barkley and Steelers James Conner. Saying “At the very least, the club that drafts him will get a more agile version of Conner.” This is lofty praise given the early career success of Barkley and Conner.

David Montgomery should be a starter in the NFL and has the potential to be an every-down running back for a team. Montgomery’s versatility should add to his value and help his draft stock. There are a handful of NFL teams looking for an every-down starter and they may covet Montgomery in a draft class that lacks any Saquan Barkley-like prospects.

Let’s take a look at Iowa State’s David Montgomery more in depth, reviewing his strengths, weaknesses, and potential fits with NFL teams.
