2019 NFL Draft Scouting Report: DE Clelin Ferrell
Floor: Vernon Gholston
No defensive end prospect wants to end up like Vernon Gholston. The 6th overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft is one of the biggest duds in NFL history. The Jets thought they were getting the next great pass rusher. Instead, they took a player who only lasted three seasons in the NFL and never made a sack in his career. Like Ferrell Gholston was seen as a player who can fit into any defensive scheme and as a physical monster. He ended up being far from great thus. Hopefully, Ferrell never ends up like him.
Celling: Olivier Vernon: As much criticism as Olivier Vernon gets, it’s hard to find a more consistent pass rusher in the NFL. In his last six seasons split between the Dolphins and Giants Vernon has recorded at least 6.5 sacks every season. Like Ferrell, Vernon is extremely long but isn’t the fastest or strongest player on the field. He does, however, have great technique. The two have a lot of similarities and having a solid career like Vernon should be something Ferrell takes happily.
Team Fits: San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets & Green Bay Packers
The best fits for Ferrell are simply the teams that need a pass rusher. Thanks to his versatility Ferrell doesn’t need to find a home with a specific defensive scheme. Thus, all of these teams make sense. The 49ers have the second overall pick in the draft, and almost surely will be taking a defensive end. Though, it will likely be either Joey Bosa or Josh Allen if the 49ers fall in love with the former Clemson pass-rusher there’s a chance Ferrell can dawn the scarlet and gold.
The Jets will be selecting third in the 2019 draft. They like the 49ers need a pass-rusher. However, it’s possible both Bosa and Allen are both off the board at three. Thus, Ferrell may be someone the Jets take a close look at as he could surely improve their pass rush.
Green Bay will be picking in the middle of the first round, and they badly need a pass rusher. This seems like the most logical pick fit for Ferrell as he probably won’t end up in the top 10. Ferrell will have a chance to be the player to turn around the Packers defense.
