I never quite understood the love for Nauta entering the 2019 NFL combine. He presented as an average athlete on tape and while he certainly has flashed some solid ability to block in the run game, he’s far from the top of this year’s tight end class.

His combine performance all but solidified that assessment.

Nauta was terrible. I mean, he was really, really bad. He ran a 4.91 40-yard dash, which according to Mock Draftable’s database puts him in the 19th percentile at his position.

It gets worse.

Nauta’s vertical jump was just 29 inches, which puts the former Georgia Bulldog in the seventh percentile among all tight ends. That’s brutal, and it’s evidence that he just doesn’t have the kind of explosive athleticism to be a factor in the NFL.

Hence the importance of his Pro Day. Nauta could be facing a do-or-die type of scenario when he works out on campus. If he puts up numbers similar to his combine performance, he’ll run the risk of falling deep into Day 3 or out of the draft altogether.
