This is where it really gets interesting in the first round. While the majority opinion is that Dee Ford’s presence in San Francisco won’t change the 49ers’ plans with the No. 2 pick, plans that most assume involve Ohio State’s Nick Bosa, it just seems like an awful lot to invest in one position in a single offseason.

Sure, you can never have enough pass rushers. And absolutely, having Ford locked-up on a massive veteran contract and Bosa tied to the franchise on his rookie deal would seem to make a lot of salary-cap sense, but it’s still a lot of cash no matter how you slice it.

We’ve seen teams make decisions like this in the past. Look at the Bears, who traded for Khalil Mack despite having a first-round pass-rusher (Leonard Floyd) on the roster. The Broncos drafted Bradley Chubb in the first round last year despite already having one of the game’s best in Von Miller.

So while Bosa is still the favorite to go second overall, it’ll be interesting to see if Ford’s arrival moves GM John Lynch in a different direction.
