Round 2, Pick 36: Justin Layne | CB | Michigan State

The 49ers signed Jason Verrett to a one-year prove-it deal, and if the veteran cornerback stays healthy all 16 games, he’ll end up earning a very, very rich contract. But his track record suggests he won’t be able to, and even if he does, San Francisco still needs more talent at cornerback.

Justin Layne is a well-built prospect at 6-2, 192 pounds and he ended 2018 as one of the more productive playmakers at the position. He had 15 pass breakups, good for a top-10 ranking in FBS play.

Layne doesn’t have the quickest feet at the position and he tends to open his hips a touch too soon when threatened by speed, but he has really good instincts and isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty against the run. He projects as a legitimate starting cornerback in the NFL and would be a really strong pick for the 49ers here.
