Is Will Grier being overlooked in 2019 NFL Draft QB class?
By Bryan Perez
West Virginia QB Will Grier is starting to climb the 2019 NFL Draft board after a strong showing at his college Pro Day.
West Virginia’s Will Grier is a legitimate NFL quarterback prospect but he’s been described mainly as a top-end backup with limited upside as a starter thus far through the NFL draft process.
Grier held his college Pro Day Thursday and, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he put the scouting industry on notice with a spectacular performance.
Schefter’s tweet comes from the opinion of just one scout, and sure, that scout might be alone with his high praise. But Grier’s college career did include several impressive moments that at one point in the season had him in the first-round discussion.
Grier checked-in plenty big enough at the 2019 NFL Combine; he measured 6-2, 217 pounds. He’s actually heavier than I expected considering how skinny he looks on tape. He was pretty solid athletically, too, running a 4.84 40-yard dash and jumping 34 inches in his vertical.
Grier had a good year in the box score in 2018, throwing for 3,864 yards with 37 touchdowns and eight interceptions. But as any schooled evaluator will tell you, the box score never reveals the full story.
The West Virginia offense was a perfect fit for Grier to pad his stats a bit, as his film reveals a few concerning aspects about his game. His arm strength is barely average and his ball placement is just too inconsistent to feel comfortable with. He’s not inaccurate, but he has a tendency to take unnecessary risks especially when his primary read isn’t open.
Still, the NFL is starving for competent quarterback play and if Grier gives a quarterback-needy team hope that he can be an above-average starter, he could skyrocket up the board come draft day.
I have him as a solid mid-Day-3 pick at this point in the process, but as stated above, it only takes one team to fall in love with him.
