Round 1, Pick 13: Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

It’s beginning to feel like Dwayne Haskins is slipping down the first-round draft board after NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein said his draft stock has been somewhat inflated, a sentiment ESPN’s Jimy Nagy echoed here.

And while both Zierlein and Nagy are probably correct, the reality is quarterbacks always get pushed up the board because of how valuable the position is. In the case of the Dolphins, they’re a perfect fit for Haskins, who’d be able to sit a year behind Fitzpatrick while he adjusts to the NFL game.

There are certainly areas of Haskins game that warrant concern. He’s not the most mobile quarterback in the class and he doesn’t have a great deep ball. But in a league starving for guys who can put a team in position to win a game, Haskins will have suitors.

Miami can’t assume they’ll be in a position next year to draft a player with more upside than Haskins. It’s an extremely risky approach, one that carries more risk than Haskins potentially being a bust.
