4 potential surprises in the 1st round of the 2019 NFL draft
By Bryan Perez
Ed Oliver is the first non-quarterback drafted
Oliver began the 2018 college football season as a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick and a player most analysts described as the next coming of Aaron Donald. And while nothing’s changed since then, he’s slid down the first-round board because of size concerns and positional fit; he’s a man without a true position moving forward in the NFL.
But the draft process is nothing more than one big circle. Once the first round begins, Oliver will be valued as one of the top two or three players in the class and could be the first non-quarterback selected, even ahead of Nick Bosa (Ohio State). Is it likely this will happen? Of course not. But if you’re looking for where a big first-round stunner could come from, it’s Oliver.
