New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman claimed to know, for a fact, two teams would have drafted QB Daniel Jones before No. 17. Just don’t include the Washington Redskins, according to team president Bruce Allen.

The New York Giants have suddenly — well, maybe not so suddenly — found themselves in the unenviable place as the laughing stock of the NFL. And whether that status is deserved or not, it’s in large part because of how general manager Dave Gettleman has handled himself and the team’s moves this offseason.

The obvious starting point is the Odell Beckham, Jr. trade. Gettleman sent one of the NFL’s premier playmakers to the Browns for, essentially, the 17th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft which he later flipped into former Clemson defensive lineman, Dexter Lawrence. The trade was terrible, and the pick was a reach. Not good.

The real draft-day hysteria began 11 picks earlier for Gettleman when he selected former Duke QB Daniel Jones with the No. 6 pick. If Lawrence at 17 was a reach, then this was like elastigirl on full extension.

Gettleman had a good reason for taking Jones when he did. That is, if you believe him.

“I know for a fact there were two teams that would have taken him in front of 17,” Gettleman said. “I know that for a fact.”

One of those teams was assumed to be the Redskins, who ended up selecting former Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins at No. 15. Team president Bruce Allen shot down any suspicion Washington was in the market for Jones.

“We picked the player we wanted to pick,” Allen said. “I’m almost positive Dave has no clue what our draft board would be. I don’t know which draft boards he knows, but he doesn’t know ours.”

Ahh, nothing like NFC East rivals throwing shade at each other.

Ultimately, no one will really know whether Gettleman made the right decision with Jones until three or more seasons from now. By then, Jones will have either established himself as the Giants’ franchise quarterback or the entire front office an coaching staff will have moved on.

Buckle up, Giants fans. This is going to be a bumpy ride for a long, long time.
