Bryce Love eyeing training camp return for Redskins

Bryce Love, the former Stanford running back and fourth-round pick of the Washington Redskins, is eyeing a training camp return from a torn ACL he suffered in December.
The Washington Redskins rolled the dice on Stanford running back Bryce Love in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft after the former Heisman Trophy finalist tore his ACL in December, an injury that puts his playing status this season very much in doubt.
According to Love, there’s no question he’ll be ready to play. In fact, he expects to return before the season even kicks off.
“My goal is to be ready by training camp, mid-training camp,” Love said. “Being able to find a way to compete and do my thing.”
Love’s goal seems a bit unrealistic especially considering the nature of his position. Sure, players have made full recoveries from injuries like his in eight months, but there’s no reason to rush him back to the field before the regular season kicks off.

The Redskins are monitoring more than just Love’s injury. Last year’s second-round pick, Derrius Guice, tore his ACL in August and his recovery hasn’t gone as quickly as he had hoped; it’s a cautionary tale for Love’s timeline.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden’s been a bit more conservative when discussing Love’s road to recovery. “I don’t know yet,” Gruden said shortly after the draft about how long it will take to get Love onto the field. “We have to get him in here first. We’re obviously aware of the injury. As far as the length of time it will take for him to be 100 percent in football shape, we don’t know that yet.”
Prior to his injury, Love was considered a Day 2 prospect who has the kind of field-flipping speed and receiving ability that teams looking for a complementary piece to their running game would covet, similar to the role Giovani Bernard has played for so many years with the Bengals.
The Redskins got good value in the fourth round. Love will pair with Guice to form a very intriguing one-two punch in the NFC East, assuming they can both get back to full strength.
