2019 NFL Draft Do-Overs: NFC North
By Bryan Perez
Chicago Bears
The Bears didn’t have many picks in the 2019 NFL Draft because of the trades for Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller last offseason, so there isn’t much to really pick on from their draft class. But one position they seemed pretty set at was wide receiver, making the selection of Riley Ridley in the fourth round feel like a missed opportunity for Chicago to fill a bigger need elsewhere.
Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye was one of the best players still on the board on Day 3 and has the kind of skill set that projects favorably for him to eventually become a starter in the NFL. And with Chicago losing Bryce Callahan in free agency and lacking cornerback depth behind Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara and Buster Skrine, Oruwariye would’ve been a really, really good pick.
Instead, Ridley joins a crowded receiver room and will have to claw his way to playing time in 2019. Sure, he could eventually emerge as a starter in 2020 and beyond, depending on how things work out with Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel, but next year’s draft will be loaded at wide receiver and the Bears could’ve focused on the position at that time.
