Eli Manning says Daniel Jones ‘has the right attitude’

The dust is beginning to settle around the New York Giants’ selection of Daniel Jones in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and by all accounts, the rookie quarterback has been impressive so far.
New York Giants first-round pick, Daniel Jones, is in the midst of his first series of offseason team activities in the NFL, and he’s already made a positive impression on the two-time Super Bowl winner he’ll be backing up in 2019.
Eli Manning met with the media Monday and said Jones is off to a good start.
“He throws the ball well,” Manning said. “He’s a good kid and he’s working on picking up the offense. He has the right attitude.”
Jones will get the majority of his snaps with the second team this offseason. Coach Pat Shurmur said the sixth overall pick has to get himself ready to play in Week 1.
“I view the quarterback position as we have a starter in Eli and we have guys behind him, specifically Daniel Jones, (who) needs to do everything he can to be able to play week one,” Shurmur said. “That is where we’re at.”
No first-round pick will be as heavily scrutinized as Jones over the next few seasons. His selection was the major jaw-dropper in the top 10 and if it wasn’t for the dysfunction in the New York Jets front office, the Giants would still be taking a beating for making the pick. Even if it’s unfair.
Jones completed 60.5% of his passes for 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions during his final season at Duke and was projected as a fringe first-round pick throughout the season. The buzz surrounding his draft status continued to get louder and louder after the Senior Bowl until eventually crescendoing at No. 6 overall.
And now, he’ll be the most important player on the Giants roster if something happens to Manning.
“He’s just gotta get reps, just like every other player,” Shurmur said. “He will be in there competing with the twos. Sometimes the threes.”
