The 2020 NFL draft will give quarterback-needy teams several prospects to choose from, but in this new mock draft, it isn’t Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert who goes No. 1 overall.

The 2020 NFL Draft is 11 months away, and with the dog days of summer quickly approaching, draft analysts will intensify their research and tape study for next April’s class of prospects. Along with that enhanced focus on next year’s group will come new mock drafts which, naturally, will end up being very, very wrong.

CBS Sports’ Will Brinson published his first swing at a 2020 mock draft and he wasted little time raising eyebrows with the player he pegs as the No. 1 pick overall to the Miami Dolphins: Georgia QB Jake Fromm.

It’s not that I hate the idea of the Dolphins selecting a quarterback in next year’s first round. There’s as good of a chance that they will as there is that they won’t, so why not send them one in a mock draft.

More from Mock Drafts

I just can’t fathom any way that Fromm ends up the most coveted passer in next year’s group, especially considering Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert are expected to be his primary competition. Both are much, much better NFL prospects at this point in the process and while Fromm can certainly close the gap this season, he’ll need a near-miraculous year to do it.

As for Herbert? Brinson has him going third overall to the Raiders in a pick that makes a ton of sense. Herbert’s strong arm and better-than-expected athleticism should rank him high on Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock’s draft board, although they established a theme in the 2019 NFL draft that suggests they favor players from Alabama (and Clemson).

So maybe it’ll be Tua, instead.

Another head-scratcher in this mock draft is at wide receiver, where Brinson has the Bills selecting Colorado’s Laviska Shenault at No. 4 overall. Yes, ahead of Jerry Jeudy.

Sorry, ain’t happening.

Jeudy is one of the most electrifying offensive prospects in many, many years. He’s such an exciting playmaker that he could be the first non-quarterback selected. The NFL is beginning to value field-flipping wide receivers more than it ever has, and Jeudy is as good as it gets in that department.
