Steelers linebacker Devin Bush did some good things at the team’s OTAs, but veteran Cam Heyward would like to see growth in at least one area of his game.

Just because a rookie enters the NFL as a top-10 pick doesn’t mean they won’t be subjected to criticism or even some friendly jabs from veteran teammates.

In the case of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Devin Bush, he’ll have to get a bit rougher around the edges before his defensive teammates are ready to buy in. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, veteran Cameron Heyward said Bush “needs more bass in his voice” if he’s going to be the guy calling plays for the Steelers defense.

It’s hard to tell if Heyward is messing around with the actual tone of Bush’s voice or if he means Bush needs to deliver the calls with more confidence. Either way, it’s obvious Bush will experience the traditional rite of passage most, if not all rookies experience in the locker room in Year 1.

Fowler did note some positive takeaways on Bush from OTAs; he said the former Michigan Wolverine “looks like he belongs” when competing alongside the Steelers’ veteran defenders. His speed and explosiveness appear to be translating well on the next level.

There’s little doubt Bush will be a productive starting linebacker in the NFL. He was my highest-graded linebacker in this year’s class and has as much (if not more) talent as Devin White, who was selected a few spots earlier by the Buccaneers.

Bush’s upside is so high, in fact, that he could end up winning the 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. He’s that good. And if he does, the level of bass (or lack thereof) in his voice really won’t matter all that much.

And let’s not forget how fiery of a leader Bush can actually be at times:

Heyward is doing his part as one of the defense’s veteran leaders to send a message to Bush before his first training camp kicks off. He’s about to buckle up against grown men, and he’ll need to approach the process with as much confidence as he played with during his time at Michigan.
