Kyler Murray says Cardinals offense can be ‘pretty dangerous’
By Bryan Perez
Cardinals rookie QB Kyler Murray is already lightyears ahead in his knowledge of coach Kliff Kingsbury’s playbook.
The Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft for obvious on-field reasons, but in order to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL, it takes more than just a live arm and athletic ability.
Murray has those extra traits; the ‘it’ factor, if you will. He’s a winner who exudes confidence and he’s been displaying those qualities in the short time he’s been in Arizona.
Murray said Tuesday from the team’s mandatory minicamp in Tempe, Arizona that he thinks the Cardinals offense can be “pretty dangerous” once he and his teammates have a chance to really grind the system’s finer details. He also confirmed that he’s very familiar with coach Kliff Kingsbury’s system, but admits there’s still a bit to learn.
“I feel like I haven’t really seen it all. Obviously, I haven’t went live or played in a scrimmage yet or stuff like that. I’m getting used to it right now,” he said via AZcentral.com. “But for me, I’m just taking it one day at a time. I can’t wait until it’s really on.”
Don’t be fooled, however. Murray is very familiar with what the Cardinals want to do on offense in 2019.
“Coach Kingsbury obviously knows it the best. But yeah, obviously with (Fitzgerald) being a veteran and not having to come to every OTA and stuff like that and me being there every day, studying every day, yes, I do know it better.”
Like Murray, Cardinals fans can’t wait until it’s on, too. Murray is the most exciting thing that’s happened to the franchise since Kurt Warner was launching touchdowns to Larry Fitzgerald during Arizona’s Super Bowl run in 2008.
Murray is the only rookie quarterback who’s assured a starting role in Week 1 this season. There’s a chance Dwayne Haskins will be under center for the Redskins on opening weekend, but it’s Murray who will be the headliner.
The Cardinals open the season at home on September 8 against the Detroit Lions.
