Added to an explosive Indianapolis Colts attack, Parris Campbell is said to be in the mix to be their third wide receiver as a rookie in 2019.

The Indianapolis Colts made a point of putting more weapons around Andrew Luck in the offseason, and second-round pick Parris Campbell already appears in line for a prominent role in their passing attack.

Keith Bowen of 1070 The Fan reported the former Ohio State star should be in the mix for the third wide receiver role behind T.Y. Hilton and free-agent signing Devin Funchess.

Being given such a position on the depth chart will likely see Campbell used heavily from the slot, where his speed and ability to pick up yardage after the catch should prove a huge asset.

However, Campbell has the versatility to be used in a multitude of ways. He frequently caught the ball out of the backfield with the Buckeyes and also has the foot quickness to suggest he can win at the top of the route operating on the boundary, though a lack of experience facing press coverage means it is unclear whether his agility will translate to success at the NFL level.

If it does then Campbell could soon ascend to a larger role in the Colts’ offense. Funchess’ superior frame and experience gives him an edge at present but, with NFL teams increasingly comfortable selecting players who are receivers built like running backs, the 6’0″ and 205-pound Campbell should be able to make a case for becoming a starter regardless of size.

For all the success the Colts had last season, when it came to the playoffs they could not keep pace with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. They need explosive playmakers to prevent that scenario from coming to pass again in 2019 and the early buzz around Campbell suggests they are already confident he can be a difference-maker right off the bat.
