Byron Cowart, Defensive End, New England Patriots

Round 5 Pick 21 (Pick 159 Overall)

I thought I was higher than most on Byron Cowart by having a mid-round grade on him. Apparently, New England saw a lot of the same things I did.

He was a very highly ranked recruit out of high school, and while he never exactly lived up to that hype, the skill is there on tape to project success in the NFL if used correctly.

I saw Cowart as a versatile defensive lineman who could effectively play both inside and outside depending on the situation. He doesn’t have the best quickness or speed but makes up for it with his power and strength.

New England lost their versatile piece in Trey Flowers along with Malcolm Brown in free agency. If Cowart is a quick learner, he is perfectly suited for Flowers’ old role in the Patriots defense. I expect him to start the season as at least a key rotational player before developing into a bigger role.
