2019 Supplemental Draft: Jaguars to sign Marcus Simms
The Jacksonville Jaguars did not use a pick in the Supplemental Draft, but are adding West Virginia’s Marcus Simms to their roster after he went undrafted.
Marcus Simms is heading to Jacksonville to boost the Jaguars’ receiving corps after he went undrafted in the Supplemental Draft.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jaguars are signing Simms, pending a physical, adding him to a group of wideouts in which there should be plenty of competition for places.
Simms had reportedly been given a draftable grade after three seasons at West Virginia, but was not anticipated to be selected due to character concerns.
He caught 87 passes for 1,457 yards and eight touchdowns in his career with the Mountaineers, while also showing significant promise as a returner. Simms averaged 24.2 yards per kick return for West Virginia.
However, Tony Pauline wrote when Simms declared for the Supplemental Draft that he comes with “a lot of character concerns”. That did not stop the Jaguars, whose locker room was far from the happiest place last season, from beating several teams to his signature.
Simms now faces an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster. The Jags are not exactly blessed with star power at receiver but they have done a decent job of putting weapons around Nick Foles in the offseason.
Keelan Cole, Marqise Lee and Dede Westbrook all figure to be a prominent fixtures in the offense along with D.J. Chark and Chris Conley, who Jacksonville brought over from Kansas City.
With Terrelle Pryor, Tre McBride and undrafted free agent Tyre Brady — who impressed many with his performances in practice at this year’s Senior Bowl — also in the mix Simms’ best hope may be to secure a place on a practice squad with some strong showings in preseason.
To even be considered for a roster spot he will have to prove his talent far outweighs the issues that saw him go undrafted.
