Greedy Williams has rough day at Browns training camp
By Bryan Perez
Cleveland Browns rookie CB Greedy Williams didn’t have his best day at training camp earlier this week.
One of the more shocking storylines of the 2019 NFL draft was the slide experienced by former LSU cornerback, Greedy Williams. Once considered the top cover-guy in the draft, Williams fell out of the first round. His freefall stopped at No. 46 overall when the Cleveland Browns finally pulled the trigger.
Williams wasn’t the perfect draft prospect. He appeared allergic to tackling and chose not to go on any pre-draft visits. Neither bodes well for a player’s draft stock. None of that matters now, however. He’s a Brown, and he has a chance to play a significant role on a team primed to make a playoff run.
He’ll have to earn it, though.
According to the Browns Wire’s Jeff Risdon, Williams had a rough go of it Monday at training camp.
“Working primarily with the second-team defense, Williams had trouble with route anticipation and positional awareness on several reps,” Risdon wrote. “Greedy was no match for Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi’s raw speed on a post route. The undrafted rookie got a good three steps beyond Williams, who was bailed out by a drop on a slightly underthrown pass from Drew Stanton.”
Not good.
But, it’s early. And one of the biggest mistakes fans make is overreacting to one practice session. In fact, there are some players who struggle in practice only to thrive on gameday.
Williams certainly has the talent and coverage skills to become a starter in the NFL. He has great length and works best in press-man. As is the case with any player entering the league, sometimes system fit — or lack thereof — determine a guy’s early success rate. Let’s hope the Browns are using Williams correctly.
Williams appeared in 24 games for LSU, totaling 49 tackles, eight interceptions and 19 passes defended during that span.
