Undrafted rookie WR Jakobi Meyers is having a strong performance at New England Patriots training camp this summer.

Jakobi Meyers is making a strong bid to be the next in a long line of undrafted rookie free agents to make the New England Patriots 53-man roster.  He looks to join the likes of Malcolm Butler, Mike Wright, Gary Guyton and Kenbrell Thompkins as guys who don’t just make the team but contribute on gamedays.

As we creep into August where joint workouts and preseason games are huge in evaluation, Meyers has crept up the depth chart to the point he’s catching passes from Tom Brady with the starters.  While first-round pick N’Keal Harry has been hot and cold, it’s Meyers who’s been the most impressive rookie.

The former N.C State star went undrafted despite catching 92 passes or 1,047 yards in 2018.  He occupied the slot role for the Wolfpack, running a variety of routes for QB Ryan Finley.  He showed ability as a chain-mover over the middle with great sideline awareness on outside routes.

Meyers also proved to be a tough guy to bring down in the open field. He always fought for extra yards. He was a good high-point catcher, too.

Despite this skill set, Meyers’ NFL combine performance hurt his stock. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash which raised questions about his ability to separate from pro cornerbacks.

Meyers found a good spot in New England, though. The Patriots depth chart is wide open. Outside of Edelman and Harry, it’s anyone’s guess how the final cuts will end up.  If he continues to improve from practice to practice and makes a few big plays in preseason games, Bill Belichick will have no problem keeping him over a more established veteran.

Meyers is certainly a name to keep an eye on this summer.
