In this 53-man roster series, we will try to predict which players will make every team’s final squad. Next up, the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions have had two double-digit win seasons since 1996. Despite often being unfairly criticized, the Lions have been much more competitive since drafting Matthew Stafford in 2009. They are hoping second-year Head Coach Matt Patricia can help take them to the next level.

On paper, the roster in Detroit looks to be slowly improving under Patricia and General Manager Bob Quinn. That being said, they’re still a year or two away from truly competing for a playoff spot in 2019.

The NFC North is one of the more challenging divisions in the league in 2019 with the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings all profiling as playoff contenders. And while the Lions certainly have enough talent to put up a fight, they’re the team that’s most likely to end up in the division’s basement.

As a result, the Lions will have a high draft pick in 2020 and should continue the slow and steady improvement of the overall roster. Whether Patricia’s leash is long enough to see his plan through is anyone’s guess.

For now, let’s take a look at what the final 53-man squad for 2019 could look like.
