2020 NFL Draft: Jerry Jeudy tops list of dynamic WR prospects
Collin Johnson has unfair size standing at 6’6″, 220 pounds with somewhere in the range of 4.5 speed. He’s a mismatch against every corner that lines up against him and to that end, his quarterback, Sam Ehlinger, routinely gives him jump ball opportunities that Johnson takes advantage of time after time. His reach, body control, and timing make him the premiere red zone threat in this draft class.
Receivers his height usually tend to struggle in route running, though Johnson displays good balance in his routes and runs a beautiful curl route, which he consistently breaks the first tackle on for more yardage. Though his bread and butter will always be the alley-oop style deep ball, Johnson is a load in the open field after the catch.
Still, it’s worrisome that as good as a threat Johnson is on jump balls, of his 68 catches just seven were touchdowns. The problem with jump balls is that it’s a low percentage play, regardless of how good the receiver is. I’d like to his touchdown numbers rise in 2019, as they should and are expected to. Another year with Ehlingerwill allow Johnson to show NFL scouts even more of his impressive skill set.
