Russell Wilson says D.K. Metcalf has to ‘stay humble and keep working’

D.K. Metcalf fell to the second round of the 2019 NFL draft despite being one of the top offensive prospects in the class; he’ll have a great opportunity in Seattle to prove that the rest of the league made a huge mistake.
Seattle Seahawks rookie WR D.K. Metcalf possesses the kind of rare physical traits that should allow him to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, to NFL defensive backs. He’s a freakish combination of size (6-3, 228) and speed (4.33 40-yard dash) that few cornerbacks can compete with.
But like any supremely gifted athlete, he’ll have to put in the time and effort in practices and meetings in order to harness all of his natural ability.
Metcalf had a promising debut in Seattle’s preseason opener. While he managed just one catch for eight yards, he was close to making two other huge plays. More importantly, the game wasn’t too big or fast for him.
According to QB Russell Wilson, Metcalf has to stay humble and wait for his opportunity to make an impact.
“The key for him, the key for any highly-touted player is to remain humble and to keep working,” Wilson said Monday. “He’s got great humility, he’s got great poise, he’s confident, he’s competitive as you can imagine, and he’s got all the athletic ability in the world. So it’s our job to give him a chance and let him make plays.”
There should be plenty of opportunities for Metcalf to make plays this season. The only wide receiver on Seattle’s roster with any real playmaking experience is Tyler Lockett, whose game is based more on quick-twitch routes and game-breaking speed. He’s very different, in every way, than Metcalf.
Jaron Brown? Keenan Reynolds? David Moore? These are the names Metcalf will compete with for targets. So, yeah, he’s going to be a big-time factor for the Seahawks in 2019.
According to Wilson, Metcalf appears up for the challenge.
“The guy is focused,” Wilson said. “The suns barely coming up for three days in a row. I don’t think his work ethic or his mentality is ever going to be in question, I think he’s going to be ready to roll.”
