New York Giants: Daniel Jones a strong bet for Offensive Rookie of the Year
Daniel Jones is the talk of the NFL and could be a frontrunner for rookie of the year honors if he builds on his outstanding first start for the Giants.
Daniel Jones needed just one start to the silence the doubters and can now be considered a contender for one of the biggest individual prizes in the NFL.
The New York Giants’ selection of Jones with the sixth overall pick was met with widespread derision. After leading the Giants to an incredible 32-31 comeback win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jones is again the talk of the league, but this time all of the discussion is positive.
Jones demonstrated poise, pocket presence, accuracy and mobility in throwing for 336 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a pair of scores to give the Giants their first win.
If he continues to perform in the same manner, Jones is likely to be a frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
That is a scenario few could have envisaged at the start of the season but, with Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals struggling to find the offensive explosion many expected, Jones could well be the top rookie passer come the end of 2019.
Quarterbacks have a distinct advantage when it comes to individual awards, and there is little competition from those playing the offensive skill positions so far.
Josh Jacobs is averaging over five yards per carry but has yet to have a dominant performance and will need many to claim the honor on an Oakland Raiders team looking unlikely to contend in a tough AFC West.
Terry McLaurin has enjoyed an incredible start to his pro career, but the winless Redskins’ struggles should overshadow his achievements.
Marquise Brown is in a strong position to contend for the honor. He has already established himself as a favorite target of Lamar Jackson and has 282 yards at an average of 20.1 per reception.
Brown will have an excellent case should he continue to thrive as part of an explosive Baltimore Ravens attack.
However, Jones now has another 13 games to build his resume. Two of those come against the Redskins while he will also face the Cardinals, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins. He will have ample opportunity for more defining moments and has the edge of playing in a massive media market for a team firmly in the national consciousness.
Jones, like every rookie quarterback, will have his ups and downs but, if he produces more displays like his showing in Tampa Bay, then ‘Danny Dimes’ may end the season with some prestigious silverware in his trophy cabinet.
