2020 NFL Draft: Jake Fromm struggles in defeat to South Carolina
Jake Fromm endured a very difficult day as Georgia’s College Football Playoff hopes took a huge hit in a defeat to South Carolina.
Jake Fromm did little to silence his doubters as Georgia suffered a defeat that dealt a significant blow to the Bulldogs’ hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff.
Georgia lost 20-17 to South Carolina in overtime, with Fromm producing a performance that will fuel further criticism of a quarterback who is widely regarded as being a level below Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert when it comes to the 2020 NFL Draft class.
Fromm completed only 28 of his 51 passes for 295 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions, including the first pick-six of his career late in the first half, which ultimately proved crucial in a tight matchup.
That interception came as Fromm displayed poor decision-making with the pass rush in his face. Fromm heaved the ball into the air off his back foot under pressure from Javon Kinlaw, with Israel Mukuamu picking it off and striding into the end zone.
Fromm tossed another interception in overtime, though the Gamecocks missed the subsequent field goal to win the game. His failure to move the offense did eventually cost the Bulldogs, however, as Rodrigo Blankenship’s missed field goal handed victory to South Carolina.
Georgia can recover from this upset and still compete for a place in the Playoff, but this figures to be a very damaging loss for Fromm’s stock in next year’s draft.
Fromm needed to have an excellent season to be considered on the same plane as Tagovailoa and Herbert. Instead, a home game in which he was unable to figure out the defense of an average SEC team will serve as further evidence that he belongs in the tier below the top two.
