2019 Heisman Trophy Watch: Week 8
How does the race for the Heisman Trophy stack up after seven weeks of college football action?
There was a lot that happened in week seven of the college football season. Major upsets (Wisconsin), impressive performances (KJ Hamler), and concerning injuries (Tua Tagovailoa) were all major stories over the weekend. Not much has changed in the Heisman standings, except for Tagovailoa’s chances of winning the award taking a major hit with his injury. Here is how the standings currently stack up:
Honorable Mentions
Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State
Last week vs. (18) Baylor: 32 rushes| 171 yards| 5.3 ypc| 2 TD| 31 Long| 1 reception| 2 yards| 0 TD
Season Stats: 194 rushes| 1,265 yards| 6.5 ypc| 15 TD| 84 Long| 6 receptions| 24 yards| 0 TD
There is no denying that Chuba Hubbard has been the most impressive running back in the country so far this season. He already has over 1,200 yards on the ground after another strong showing against Baylor last Saturday. Hubbard continues to lead the nation in rushing yards by a very large margin, while also being tied for the most rushing touchdowns in the country as well. Team success is a big part of the award as well, which is the only reason Hubbard isn’t among the leaders for the Heisman Trophy. Despite his best efforts, the Cowboys already have three losses on the season. Hubbard will try to continue his excellent season and get Oklahoma State back in the win column this Saturday when they travel to Ames to take on no. 23-ranked Iowa State.
JK Dobbins, RB, Ohio State
Last week at Northwestern: 18 rushes| 121 yards| 6.7 ypc| 1 TD| 68 Long| 3 receptions| 30 yards| 1 TD
Season Stats: 134 rushes| 947 yards| 7.1 ypc| 7 TD| 68 Long| 10 receptions| 74 yards| 2 TD
Is it possible to have a quietly explosive game? Because that’s exactly what the Ohio State offense accomplished against Northwestern last Friday night. It felt like the offense was mostly bottled up until you looked at the score and saw they won 52-3. That includes Dobbins, who ended with 121 rushing yards on just 18 carries while having just his third multi-touchdown game of the season. While Dobbins is having an excellent season and is among the nation’s leaders in rushing yards, the thing holding Dobbins back from being a true contender for the Heisman Trophy is his quarterback Justin Fields. Fields has been a touchdown machine for Ohio State this season and has thus taken opportunities away from Dobbins. Dobbins will look to continue to get in the end zone in the big showdown with 13th-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday.
Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
Last week at (25) Washington: 24-for-38 (63.2%)| 280 yards| 4 TD| 0 INT
Season Stats: 158-for-232 (68.1%)| 1,882 yards| 21 TD| 1 INT| 20 rushes| 4 yards| 0 TD
Justin Herbert put together a strong stat line and led his team to a come-from-behind victory over the 25th-ranked Washington Huskies this past weekend. While the stats show he had a strong and efficient game, those watching the game will tell you that he missed some easy throws and left some plays on the field. Either way, it was a strong enough performance to keep him on the fringe of the Heisman conversation. Herbert and the Oregon offense will likely have to be at their best this weekend when they host the explosive Air Raid offense of Washington State.
