New York Giants: Daniel Jones’ rookie growing pains getting worse
Daniel Jones went without a touchdown in another turnover-riddled display, as the New York Giants quarterback’s growing pains continue.
Daniel Jones created a lot of buzz with his early performances as the starter for the New York Giants, but that has long since dissipated, and the concerns over the sixth overall pick will keep growing after an ugly defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
The Giants slumped to 2-7 with a 37-18 loss that was highlighted by their inability to take advantage of red-zone opportunities. Jones and New York did not find the endzone despite five red-zone trips, the Giants settling for six field goals.
More worrying than the struggles inside the 20, however, is Jones’ increasing proclivity for turnovers. Jones went into Week 9 having thrown seven interceptions in his past five games, and he tossed another against Dallas on an ill-advised deep throw that turned into a gift for safety Xavier Woods.
He also committed two fumbles, the latter returned for a touchdown on the final offensive play of the game in another performance to give fuel to his many doubters.
Jones’ latest poor outing came on the back of his best game of the season, a 322-yard, four-touchdown showing in a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions.
That effort and his incredible starting debut in a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look, at this point, like the outliers for Jones, whose rookie growing pains only appear to be getting worse heading into the second half of the season.
Jones is far from the first rookie passer to struggle with turnovers but, in a season that has seen Kyler Murray and Gardner Minshew protect the ball well, his issues with giveaways are a bad look for a franchise hoping to silence those who did not deem him worthy of a top-10 pick.
