Scouting Report

Last and certainly not least of the Alabama football wide receiver trio is DeVonta Smith, who has seen his draft stock slowly and steadily rise on a week-to-week basis. The best receiver on the Crimson Tide production wise, Smith has flashed NFL caliber traits as well and has proven he is not the third wheel behind Jeudy and Ruggs.

This season alone, Smith has matched his career numbers in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns as he has posted elite production for Alabama. Coming into the 2019 campaign, Smith’s junior year, he had recorded just 50 catches for 853 yards and nine touchdowns; he had previously averaged just over 18 yards per catch as well. In 2019 alone, Smith has tallied 50 catches for 934 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Alabama offense.

While he does not have the big time speed and agility to separate downfield, or YAC ability of Ruggs or Jerry Jeudy, Smith has been Tua’s favorite target and leads the team in receiving for a reason. Smith has the innate ability to find holes in the zone, work himself towards Tagovailoa and back to the football, then show his number to his quarterback; while Ruggs and Jeudy are making splash plays, Smith has been a much needed security blanket for this Alabama football team.

One NFL team is going to get lucky by bringing Smith to their team via the 2020 NFL Draft. It seems borderline that Smith will be a first round pick right now, and would be a risky bet to assume, but there is no doubt that he has raised his stock enough and played himself into the conversation.
