Oklahoma football: 2020 NFL Draft prospect Grant Calcaterra retires
By Cory Kinnan
Big news out of the Oklahoma football program: tight end and 2020 NFL Draft prospect Grant Calcaterra has decided to step away from the game.
In a surprising announcement last night, Oklahoma football tight end and 2020 NFL Draft prospect Grant Calcaterra told the world that he was stepping away from the game of football. Calcaterra has suffered multiple concussions during his tenure with the Oklahoma football program, and decided that his future and health was more important than the game itself.
Calcaterra, considered to be one of the top tight end prospects in this class, has had quite the successful career down in Norman. He played only five games as a freshman due to concussions, and has played only three games this year for the same reason.
Last year was Calcaterra’s best season with the Sooners, where he recorded six scores and 396 yards on 26 catches. He flashed on film as a quick tight end who had the ability to make big time catches in tight windows from Kyler Murray a year ago.
This year in limited action, Calcaterra managed just five catches for 79 yards on the season for the Oklahoma football program. Next in line after Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens came out in 2018, Calcaterra looked to have a promising career ahead of him.
While it is hard to see a career end like this on the football field, head injuries are no joke; Calcaterra will be remembered for his impact on the Oklahoma football program, and will now retire and take the next step in his life after football. Wishing Grant Calcaterra nothing but the best in his career and with his bright future, there is nothing but respect due to the tight end for his decision to protect his body.
