Chase Young continues to dominate opposing tackles at will; will it be enough to overcome Joe Burrow for the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft?

In the 1998 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Peyton Manning, the quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers. Since Manning was selected in ’98 we have only seen 3 positions selected as the first overall pick: quarterback, offensive tackle, and defensive end — the 3 most important positions on the football field. The 2020 NFL Draft will be no different as Chase Young and Joe Burrow lead the way.

The quarterback is easily the most relevant position in the game of football. When the offense is on the field there is a 99.99% chance the quarterback will be the first to touch the ball (after the Center of course) and it’s his job to make sure the rest of the offense is doing there job. If you can get the quarterback off rhythm you’ll have a decent shot at winning the game; this is why offensive tackle and defensive end are the other two positions drafted number one overall.

It’s the offensive tackles job to keep the quarterback protected from the rival team’s defensive end. If the edge rusher can successfully get to the quarterback the offense is in for a long night, and will likely be looking for a new lineman to fill the hole. The tackle is supposed to keep the offense and the quarterback on track while the end is trying to derail the planned attack.

Currently, as it stands the Cincinnati Bengals will hold the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and after selecting Jonah Williams — the left tackle from Alabama — first overall, they already have one of the 3 crucial positions locked up. Now they’ll need to look at either LSU’s Joe Burrow or Ohio State’s Chase Young. Both prospects have had dominate years thus far, making the decision much tougher than anticipated.

It’s impossible to tell who the Bengals will pick, but what we can look at, is the “why” for each of the draftees.
