Chuba Hubbard hasn’t been getting near the credit or recognition he deserves in regards to the Heisman Trophy. It’s about time that changed. While he was bottled up most of the afternoon by West Virginia, he still accounted for over 100 yards on the ground. He also had his most prolific day as a receiver accounting for another 88 yards through the air.
There is an argument to be made that Hubbard has been the most consistent producer amongst the Heisman contenders this season. He only failed to surpass 100 yards rushing this year in one game and that was early in the season against an FCS team in which he only got eight carries. This past game was also the first game all year that he wasn’t able to find the endzone at least once. He is also the leader by a solid amount in nearly every single rushing category there is.
Hubbard will have a big test this Saturday when he battles fellow Heisman contender Jalen Hurts and 9th-ranked Oklahoma in the storied Bedlam rivalry to close out the 2019 regular season. Unlike most of the other contenders on this list, this will be the last game for Hubbard to make an impression before the Heisman vote.
It is hard for a running back to win the Heisman Trophy, a feat that has not been done since Derrick Henry in 2016. Nearly all the other contenders will be playing in an extra conference championship game next weekend.
