Scouting Report

Imagine grabbing a cookbook on Thanksgiving and deciding to make the worst dish you can find. This is what Penn State did last week when going through their gameplan for neutralizing Ohio State defensive end Chase Young.

For whatever reason, Penn State decided to continue to leave their offensive tackle in 1 on 1 situations with the best player in the country. Not double-teaming Chase Young is the ultimate recipe for disaster as Penn State left the recipe in the oven too long and got burned.

Sadly this is how the whole game looked for Penn State tackles.  Chase Young looked hungrier than ever as he helped himself to a full course meal on Saturday afternoon. He further cemented his status as the best prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft with nine tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.

His elite upfield burst found him in the back field before the offensive tackle could get into his pass set. The disruption he causes on critical downs is a testament to his elite competitive toughness because he always shows up when the stakes are high. One of the biggest improvements in his game so far this year has been his ability to use his hands to get him free. The improved hand usage gives him a chance to tap even more into the very good power he plays with.

Chase Young is undoubtedly the best prospect in this class and his ceiling is still very high. He can continue to add more moves to his pass rush and improve his ability to counter. There’s solid bend for him around the edge but there’s still room for improvement in this aspect of his game. A special player that deserves a trip to the Heisman ceremony, Chase Young is going to make it very hard for teams to choose a quarterback over him with the first pick.
