Scouting Report

Chazz Surratt made a bold move when he decided to make the move from quarterback to linebacker. A transition like this can be difficult but the fact he did it says a lot about his mental and physical toughness. The guy just simply wants to be on the field and evaluators are going to love that mentality because he can bring that grit to special teams as well. The move to linebacker has paid off big time for Surratt as he is gaining some stock as a draftable player at the position.

He is built really well with a compact 6’3” and 230lb frame while still being an excellent athlete. He has very good range for the position and has good foot speed to go sideline to sideline. His sideline to sideline abilities don’t interfere with how incredibly physical he plays. Surratt has very good change of direction abilities as a guy who has no trouble flipping his hips and breaking on the football in pass coverage.

He uses his athletic ability to be a dangerous blitzer that can get in the backfield in a hurry. He plays with a physical toughness as a guy who isn’t afraid to take on blocks and isn’t afraid to get in and push piles. He shoots gaps in the run game using his very good mental processing to diagnosis plays. He uses this intelligence and his former quarterback days to be elite when processing plays as a defender in pass coverage, rarely being fooled.

His newness to the position will show up on tape sometimes but there is a lot to be said for how well he made the move to linebacker. Can be overaggressive at times and take on blocks when he doesn’t need to in order to make a play. Needs to work on his consistency shedding blocks and tackling but the willingness is most certainly there. Chazz Surratt is the perfect linebacker for today’s game and I expect him to find himself going no later than the third round when draft day comes.
