Heisman Trophy Watch: Final edition as Championship weekend arrives
Last week at (13) Michigan: 14-for-25 (56%)| 302 yards| 4 TD| 0 INT| 6 rushes| 25 yards| 0 INT
Season Stats: 189-for-277 (68.2%)| 2,654 yards| 37 TD| 1 INT| 111 rushes| 470 yards| 10 TD
Three Ohio State Buckeyes on this list and two in the Top Three? That just shows how good the Buckeyes have been this season and the type of year these three incredible players are having. Of the three, however, Justin Fields probably has the best chance to push the leader and be the next Heisman Trophy winner.
Fields had one of his better days through the air against Michigan when he threw for over 300 yards (for just the second time this season) and four touchdowns. All season, this article pointed out that Fields’ yardage numbers left a lot to be desired as far as Heisman candidates. He certainly made up for that with all of his touchdowns, however, as he racked up an impressive 47 total touchdowns on the season.
That puts him in a tie for second-most in the country with the player who leads these Heisman rankings. His yardage numbers are really the only thing keeping him from being at the very top of this list. He is only a sophomore, however, so no matter how high he finishes in the votes this year, Fields will be one of the favorites to claim the award in 2020.
Fields will have one more shot to try and close the gap between him and the leader in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday versus 12th-ranked Wisconsin. While he would obviously like a big game to improve his chances for the award, he will likely be happy as long as his team can win and punch their tickets as one of the four teams in the College Football Playoff.
