Anthony McFarland Jr will forego his final two years of eligibility at Maryland and instead turn his attention to a career in the NFL.

Maryland redshirt sophomore all-purpose running back Anthony McFarland Jr has declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

He announced the news via his Twitter account on Tuesday.

The son of current ‘Monday Night Football’ announcer and longtime NFL defensive tackle Anthony “Booger” McFarland, he attended nearby DMV and national powerhouse DeMatha Catholic before signing with the Terrapins.

McFarland recorded 245 carries for 1,645 yards and 12 touchdowns in his collegiate career. He suffered an ankle injury early this season that, along with a downturn in offensive line play, contributed to a dip in his production.

A smaller back at a listed 5’9″ and 186 pounds according to the official Maryland bio, he projects as a scatback at the next level.

McFarland has a tremendous amount of speed and lateral quickness to take any carry to the endzone. Doubts over his pass-blocking ability are a natural result of his lack of size, but McFarland is a home-run hitter who should draw plenty of attention when he tests at the Scouting Combine.

After a 2019 season affected by injury, one can reasonably assume McFarland elected to declare due to the short shelf life of running backs at the next level. The Terrapins program is in a rebuild after years of mismanagement, but McFarland will hope his physical gifts will be enough to entice a team to draft him and make him a crucial part of their offense.
