2020 NFL Draft: The difficult and confusing evaluation of Justin Herbert
Herbert’s landing spots (pt III)
Oakland Raiders
Another option would be the Oakland Raiders who are moving to Las Vegas in the 2020 NFL season. After gaining some momentum midway through the season, the Raiders and head coach John Gruden have lost their last three games. It will likely take them out of playoff contention for the 2019 season.
Derek Carr is signed to a contract that is through 2022, but the team could drop the contract and only take a hit of $5 million in dead cap next year. While Carr is far from horrible, he was not Gruden’s selection. The five year veteran also lacks the ability to consistently make the explosive plays and carry his team in big games. Gruden will of had two seasons to fully evaluate Carr in his offense at the end of 2019. Will he be the longterm answer for the new Las Vegas Raiders?
Moving into a new stadium, in a new city, the team will have to find ways to attract fans to games. It won’t be hard during the first season most likely, but if Carr were to struggle in 2020 in a new town, it might be hard to build upon the fanbase in Las Vegas. Bringing in a young, talented quarterback through the 2020 NFL Draft could spark some interest as they make the move. It would also be another ideal situation where Justin Herbert could sit for a season and learn the offense. Gruden’s offense would fit Herbert’s strengths much like Indianapolis in the sense of a west coast scheme with a strong offensive line and running game.
