2020 NFL Draft: The difficult and confusing evaluation of Justin Herbert
Projection
Justin Herbert has all of the physical tools that NFL teams drool over. His size, arm strength, and athletic ability will deliver multiple suitors in the 2020 NFL Draft. Every coach believes that they can develop quarterbacks like Herbert, but finding the right coaching staff will play a large role in what he can become at the next level.
We have seen quarterbacks with similar physical tools fall off at the NFL level. Players like Jay Cutler come to mind right away for most casual fans. If Herbert can land in a good position to sit behind a veteran quarterback and/or find himself under a coaching staff that will tailor the offense to his strengths, he has a very bright future as an NFL starter.
Indianapolis and Oakland are two landing spots that meet the criteria for both of these situations. Not only would Herbert not be forced to start Week 1 of his rookie season, but the teams run a similar offense already that fit his play style and strengths. They also feature weapons, especially at the tight end position, that Herbert would benefit from as he develops early on.
Herbert wins with his arm talent, rare ball placement, aggressiveness, and athletic ability. All of which, if properly used, can make him one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. He will have to develop in some areas that include learning consistent mechanics and how to react to a collapsing pocket. If he can improve in these areas, and learn to make quick progressions, Herbert arguably has the highest ceiling in this 2020 NFL Draft quarterback class.
