Scouting Report

Xavier McKinney is putting together insane production. Is this jack of all trades ready to dethrone Grant Delpit as the top safety in 2020 NFL Draft?

Coming into the season, the top safety spot was going to belong to LSU’s Grant Delpit all season long. A dip in his production has given way to another star from his rival school. Alabama safety Xavier McKinney has played lights out football this year in what has been a breakout of sorts and has put himself in position to be the top safety in the 2020 NFL Draft.

To give a glimpse of McKinney’s stock before the season started, he was the guy who was thrown at the second safety spot and into the back half of the first round for a team who had a safety need. He was the fallback plan in what looked to be a thin safety class that would be carried by an elite prospect at the top of it.

McKinney has surged himself into legitimate first-round status with the season he is putting together so far. He quietly stuffed box scores all season long until his moment came in the LSU vs Alabama game in November. On a night where the best safety prospect was on the opposing side, McKinney was the superstar and showed the world why he could be a star at the next level. He was a one-man wrecking crew all night long to the tune of 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble.

Insane production like that is the reason why McKinney has become so intriguing as a prospect. His ability to do a little bit of everything and do it well, gives Minkah Fitzpatrick type flashbacks and is a true jack of all trades and leaves his mark on every game that he plays in due to his versatility. If you blink too fast then you may miss him take over the top safety spot in the 2020 draft class. Xavier McKinney is closing the gap and finishing the race, in what seemed to be a race that was never to be had in the beginning.
