Alabama: Did Crimson Tide land the next dual-threat QB superstar?

Alabama landed the top quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class in Bryce Young, who has the skill set to be a dual-threat quarterback superstar.

Bryce Young, the top quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class, will be playing his college football at Alabama, with the Crimson Tide hoping they have landed the latest dual-threat superstar at the position.

Young flipped from USC to Alabama in September and signed his letter of intent on Thursday, allowing coach Nick Saban to effusively praise the No. 6 overall player in the class, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

Saban, per AL.com, said:

"“I just absolutely love the guy. His character. He’s got a great family. He’s got all the right stuff. And I think that’s really important in the quarterback position. You’ve heard me say this many times before, if you play quarterback, it’s hard to play the position if the people around you don’t play well, so having great leadership qualities can contribute to that. I think Bryce certainly possesses those qualities.”"

Much will depend on whether Tua Tagovailoa returns to school after suffering a season-ending hip injury. Still, Young has the chance to make the Alabama starting quarterback job his right off the bat.

His arm talent and ability as a runner has seen Young earn comparisons to 2019 first overall pick Kyler Murray and Houston Cougars star D’Eriq King.

Mac Jones is a more one-dimensional quarterback and, if Tagovailoa is out of the picture, for Alabama, there is greater upside in handing the reins to the inexperienced quarterback who can maximize the versatility of its offense.

A lot can happen between now and the start of next season, and it is mostly redundant to speak about Young starting before Tagovailoa’s decision is known. However, if Tagovailoa decides to head to the pros in spite of his injury, it will be the first step towards Young getting the chance to prove he is worthy of the comparisons to Murray and King.
