2020 NFL Draft: Jake Fromm yet to make a decision
Jake Fromm’s 2019 season is almost over, but the Georgia quarterback has yet to decide whether it will be his last in a Bulldog uniform.
Jake Fromm will play his final game of the 2019 season on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen whether it will be his last outing for Georgia.
Bulldog quarterback Fromm, who will lead the Georgia offense in the Sugar Bowl, told reporters he has yet to decide on whether he will declare for the 2020 NFL Draft, per Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald.
If that is indeed the case, it is not a surprise. Fromm finds himself in a difficult spot at the end of a senior campaign in which he did not make the leap many expected him to.
Clearly leapfrogged by likely number one overall pick Joe Burrow, Fromm has not demonstrated the upside for NFL teams to definitively say he is a more enticing prospect than Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, and Jacob Eason. Even with Tua Tagovailoa’s hip injury, it would be a shock if Fromm went ahead of the Alabama star.
The dilemma Fromm faces is whether he is more comfortable hoping he emerges from the pack during the pre-draft process, or playing another year in Athens and securing a place at the top of the second tier of quarterbacks in 2021 behind Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields.
A significant factor in his decision could well be the loss of left tackle Andrew Thomas, who has already opted to turn pro. Were Fromm to return, he would not have a proven blindside protector and would still be operating with an inexperienced receiving corps. George Pickens has led the way for the Bulldogs this year with 552 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches.
Playing in the SEC, that is not an exciting situation for a quarterback and, if Fromm signs off 2019 in style against Baylor, it may encourage him to bet on himself and hope he can be a riser in the draft process.
